On 15th April, 1915, the 1st King’s Royal Rifle Corps battalion of 6 Brigade, 2nd Division moved into trenches at Cuinchy near La Bassée where they remained until relieved on 19th April. At 7.30am on 17th April, the enemy began a heavy bombardment of their trenches. This was repeated at 3pm and George Hillard of the machine-gun section was killed as he made his way along a communication trench called Old Kent Road. |
